Tongyeong Dongpirang Mural Village Guide: Best Route & Tourist Map

To be honest, I used to think it was just another cliché mural village. But the moment I set foot inside, I felt like I had stepped right into a fairytale. Welcome to Dongpirang Mural Village in Tongyeong, where the Instagrammable, aesthetic paintings you've only seen on your screen come alive around every corner.

🗺️Recommended Walking Route for Dongpirang

The alleyways here are like a maze, so choosing the right starting point will save you a ton of energy. From my experience, the smoothest route is starting from the post office alley behind Jungang Market and walking up clockwise along the gentle slope.

Hunting for unique and playful murals at every turn makes the walk so engaging that you won't even notice you're walking uphill!

While most tourists just stick to the main path, the real magic happens when you venture into the narrow side alleys. You’ll stumble upon hidden, charming hidden gems that are perfect for capturing those unique, one-of-a-kind shots.

💡Pro-Tip for the Perfect Shot
To capture the iconic "Angel Wings" mural—the heart of Dongpirang—try to visit either early in the morning or around sunset. This helps you beat the crowds, avoid harsh backlighting, and catch the best natural colors for your ultimate "photo of the day."
📋The Ultimate Dongpirang Itinerary
Step 1: Start near the Tongyeong Jungang Market entrance (the most convenient spot after parking).
✅ Step 2: Explore the lower main mural zone and snap a picture at the giant Angel Wings photo zone.
✅ Step 3: Pass through the K-drama filming sites and the vibrant cafe street overlooking the open sea.
✅ Step 4: Reach the highest peak, Dongporu Pavilion, to soak in the panoramic views of the refreshing Gangguan Harbor.

Once you reach Dongporu Pavilion at the very top, all your stress will instantly wash away. Feeling the cool ocean breeze while gazing at the colorful rooftops blending into the blue harbor is pure bliss.

📝Honest Review & Real Vibes from My Recent Trip

I recently visited during the holidays, so let me give you a firsthand look at these vibrant alleyways.

When I first arrived at the beginning of winter, the neighborhood felt incredibly cozy, peaceful, and warm. The charming wall art perfectly complements the nostalgic, coastal vibe of the harbor.

Moving from one alley to the next, browsing through cute, hidden souvenir shops along the way, there was never a dull moment.

I took a break at a cozy cafe mid-climb, where Tongyeong Harbor and Mt. Mireuksan unfolded right outside the window. Opening the window to let the golden sunlight stream in while enjoying a quiet moment was pure magic.

Since these hills can be quite steep, wearing stiff shoes will wear you out fast. Leave the heels behind and definitely opt for a pair of comfy, cushioned sneakers!

📍Essential Parking & Travel Etiquette Before You Go

Even though this mural village has been around for a while, it still draws big crowds on weekends and holidays. Since vehicles are strictly banned inside the village (except for residents), you absolutely need to secure a parking spot at the bottom of the hill.

For your peace of mind, I highly recommend picking out at least two nearby public parking lots on your GPS before you head out.

⚠️ Important Etiquette
Before it’s a colorful tourist attraction, this village is a quiet residential neighborhood. Please refrain from trespassing into private front yards, pointing cameras through open doorways, or shouting.

Showing respect for the residents who share their beautiful neighborhood with us is key to keeping these alleys preserved for a long time. As long as we keep basic etiquette in mind, everyone can leave with a heart full of warm, beautiful memories.
