📝 Honest Hiking Review

During college exam seasons or the first day of the lunar month, Gatbawi draws crowds from all across the nation. I chose the Daegu Gatbawi District route, fully determined to tackle all 1,365 stone steps as a personal meditation journey.

After parking, I started the 2 km one-way hike to Gwanbong Peak. The 1.1 km stretch up to Gwanamsa Temple was wide and gently sloped, making it a pleasant stroll to chat quietly and enjoy the walk.

Passing through picturesque stone paths strewn with fallen autumn leaves, I crossed the arched Yonggung Bridge and arrived at the ancient Gwanamsa Temple.

Surrounding the main hall (Daewoongjeon) and the five-story stone pagoda, vibrant red and yellow autumn foliage flared dramatically, while hikers paused under the temple eaves to quench their thirst and take a quick rest.

From Gwanamsa Temple, the path splits into a dirt trail on the right and the famous 1,365 stone staircase on the left. Carrying our wishes in our hearts, we stepped onto the stone stairs to begin our ascent. As the steep stairs continued endlessly, I quickly grew out of breath, but benches and pavilions scattered along the way offered welcome spots to rest and regain energy.

With every single step, my legs grew heavier and trembled, and my breath caught in my throat until I thought, "Why on earth did I decide to do this?" Yet, the cool mountain breeze washing away my sweat and the sweeping vistas peeking through the tree branches gave me the grit to keep pushing forward.

Reminding myself of the saying, "The journey to meet the Buddha is itself a path of spiritual practice," my aching legs pushed past the 1,303rd step, and I finally emerged onto Gwanbong Summit, beautifully adorned with vibrant lotus lanterns.

Watching people pray with deep devotion before the Buddha—forgetting the cold and exhaustion in hopes that their single wish would be granted—I felt a quiet reverence wash over me. A wave of deep fulfillment and pride swept in, knowing that every bit of hard work during the climb was worth it.

Standing at the summit of Gatbawi with the cool breeze sweeping over me, I gazed out at the endless mountain ridges unfolding below. As I stood there lost in the view, all the cluttered thoughts in my mind seemed to blow away. Though my legs wobbled a bit on the descent, my mind felt lighter and more refreshed than ever.
